Deciding to reject identity politics is about the whitest thing I’ve ever heard. White folks like us have the luxury of doing so, in order to abdicate our accountability. People who are disenfranchised can’t simply wish that away.
But more than being cowardly, it’s delusional to believe that how the world sees you and how the world treats you doesn’t impact how you see the world or expect to be treated. So while you’re talking about rejecting identity politics as though that makes you morally superior, most everyone hears what you’re really saying, which is, “the world as it is suits me just fine, and I’m not lifting a finger to change it.
